Today, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to Angelina Friedland, an IBFF Pro, the 1st IBFF Miss Fitness Universe Galaxy (Europe), 1st Overall Winner 2016, 1st Miss Shape Italia 2016 IBFA, and Photographic, Fitness Model.

Along with her husband Dion Friedland, Angelina has proved to the world that age is just a number. This is a brief introduction to Angelina’s life. She is with us today, so we get to hear her inspirational story straight from the source.

1. The Story of Angelina Friedland

Q: I would like to start by thanking you, Angelina Friedland, for taking the time to do this interview with me. You look like you are having a lot of fun within the fitness industry and genuinely enjoy training. So, to start, I’d love to ask you, how did you find your passion for body-building, and what made you get into fitness?

Angelina Friedland

A: I would like to thank you for this opportunity for an interview. I love telling my story, as it might inspire some young people. I was born in a beautiful land, Sicily, meaning lots of sun, sea, and heat. However, I decided to leave Sicily without returning at the age of 18 when I went away to seek my fortune. And I was lucky enough to find it.

Unlike many of my fellow countrymen, I had no reason to leave, as I had everything. I understood this later. What pushed me toward new discoveries was my adventurous spirit. I wanted to see with my own eyes what was out there. That same spirit later led me to discover the world, including Hawaii, Polynesia, Australia, Bahamas, Thailand, Mexico, Florida, and Indonesia.  I feel at home up to the Cook Islands, which is on the other part of the world. 

Still, I was not satisfied with the superficial journey. To discover my true dimension, I acquired the PADI scuba diving certificate. I continued pursuing my dream, digging deeper and deeper in the sea, in my natural element. Most probably, this is the most apparent memory of my homeland Sicily. But my homeland has also given me temperament heart vehemently the intransigence to abuses.

In Bali, one August night at the exit from a disco stretched out with a fist or instead with a straight, sharp, and fulminating right, a drunk Australian surfer who stretched out his hands.

The blow started naturally alone among the many onlookers. I saw a former American boxer, and he told me, “You have this sport in your DNA,” and he was right. I stopped in Philadelphia for two months, and I learned this for myself.

I was in some smelly gyms like my home facilitated by the language (I speak English snd French). Everyone was friendly, so I was encouraged by this.

When I returned to Italy, I started more controlled nutrition. Oh my God, how much I loved chocolates and ice creams. Still, I went for the scheduled workouts, healthy lifestyle, and diet.

I obtained the Certificate as a Federal Boxing Coach from the Italian Boxing Federation, so I was one of the first and rare women to teach this fascinating and unique sport. Boxing was a great school of life. It taught me to get up every time life threw me a low blow, a bit like the boxer on the mat getting back up.

One day I was leafing through a sports magazine. It was 1997, and I saw a photo of a female body-building champion. I was so fascinated to see that sculpted physique that I decided to start training with weights.

I had my first competition in 2000 at Mister Universe IBFA, and I arrived in third place. In those days, the only female categories were either body-building so very muscular or fitness. I never came in the first place because I wasn’t very muscular. I was the bikini shape, even when this category didn’t exist yet.

2. How Did You Become An IBFF Pro?

Tose Zafirov

Q: It was a long way to get there. But how did you become an IBFF Pro? Can you tell us more about your journey? How did it feel to become a champion?

Angelina Friedland

A: I was astonished to become an IBFF Pro. It was a dream come true for me, something that I could never imagine. Without a coach or a team, I went alone to the European Championships in Avellino ( Italy) in 2016. That same day I won Miss Fitness, Miss Fitness Over 40, and Overall Woman, and I got my Pro Card. Two weeks later, I went to the World Championship in Koper, where I arrived in second place as a bikini model. I was delighted as I competed with 16 beautiful girls much younger than me. So, it was a big win for me.

3. A Day In The Life Of Angelina

Q: What does a day in the life of Angelina Friedland look like? How many hours a day do you spend at the gym, what do you eat, how do you spend your free time?

Angelina Friedland

A: Dion and I go to the gym together for three days of training and one of rest. We train for about two and a half hours. He trains very hard and does at least 50 sets. My workout depends on whether I compete now or not. The rest of the day, we work, and I prepare the meals for us.

4. Something More About The Training Routine

Tose Zafirov

Q: Can you tell us a little bit more about your training sessions, what do you usually train, who is your motivation, and of course, what does it feel like to train with your husband, Dion Friedland?

Angelina Friedland

A: My training varies according to my goal. If I have a competition soon, I do two workouts a day: cardio and weights. If I do not have to do any competition, I do weight training and cardio at the end of the workout with a lot of stretching. In the alternating periods, I also do a lot of yoga and acrobatics. I am always motivated because I still like to go to the gym. I want to work out. It is a massive part of my lifestyle. In other words, I would not be able to imagine my day without the gym; it makes me feel good and gives me balance.

5. How Has Body-Building Influenced Your Life?

Q: Has body-building influenced your life, and how?

Angelina Friedland

A: Body-building taught me to follow the rules that I set for myself. It taught me discipline, how to be patient, and how to improve my character. I have built my personality to become stronger and overcome my limits each day.

6. What About Your Network?

Tose Zafirov

Q: How do you feel when you are around people? Do you love expanding your network on a daily or you’re more of a loner?

Angelina Friedland

A: I love it when I am around people, and I like that people look at me. I like that both my husband and I inspire people, as we can prove that age is just a number.

7. Can You Tell Me More About Your Nutrition?

Tose Zafirov

Q: What about your daily food intake, what do you eat, what supplements do you take, and do you have a healthy diet filled with vitamins and proteins?

Angelina Friedland

A: This is a good question. Unfortunately, my constitution is not tiny, so to be fit, I have to take very few calories. My diet is about 1,200 calories with very few carbohydrates, five protein snacks with 50 g of carbohydrates in competition. Sadly, this is how it is.

8. How Long Have You Known Friedland And How Did You Meet?

Tose Zafirov

Q: How long have you known Friedland, and how did you meet? Has he been a significant influence in your life?

Angelina Friedland

A: Mr. Friedlander was a gift from the world of body-building. If I hadn’t practiced this sport, we would never have met, and it would have been a significant loss to me because Dion is a wonderful man and is a man who teaches me every day so many things and that he loves me. We have known each other for five years. After 13 weeks, he wanted to marry me. We have been married for two years, two happy years. The secret of our happiness is that we love the same things, especially the gym and healthy food.

9. Can You Balance It All?

Tose Zafirov

Q: How do you balance family time with your career? Do you make any sacrifices in this regard?

Angelina Friedland

A: I am a very active and very dynamic woman. I like to be busy, and I manage to combine everything. I train, take care of the house and my baby husband Dion, cook, shop, and do whatever I like. Yes, I can!

10. What Is Your Message To The World?

Tose Zafirov

Q: If you had the chance to send a message to the entire world, what would you tell?

Angelina Friedland

A: My message is to love each other and to take care of your body. It would be best to take care of your spiritual life by doing meditation and exploring spiritual paths. After all, a healthy mind in a healthy body is essential to growing old. All of us must age, but if you love yourself and take care of your body, you will age better.
