1. Who Is Dušan Domović Bulut?

Tose Zafirov

Q: Can you tell the audience a bit more about yourself? What is your background? How did 3×3 become a part of your life? How did you discover your love for this sport, and what drove you to pursue a professional career in it?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: Hello Tose, my name is Dusan Bulut, and I am a professional 3X3 player, born and raised in Novi Sad, Serbia. I got caught up in the game at a really young age. At the age of 9, I started to play basketball, and at age 10, I started to play 3X3 tournaments. This was one of the things that Serbians did during the summer, and I fell in love with the game immediately. When I was a teenager, at age 16-17, I already played enough 3X3 tournaments to earn some pocket money with my friends during the summer. During the winter, we go back and play 5×5 basketball. Back in 2021, when FIBA organized the basketball 3X3 international tournaments, I gathered a team, and we went all in. I stopped playing professional basketball and dreamed of becoming one of the best 3X3 players because I preferred the freedom and creativity this game gives you.

2. The Preparation Process

Tose Zafirov

Q: How do you prepare for a game? Do you have any specific rituals you perform, and why is that so? Do you follow a specific nutrition and exercise plan? Also, do you use fitness gyms regularly and right before a game?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: I don’t have an exact routine I practice, but instead, I do some kind of light meditation before a game. The routine I practice is consisted of just staying prepared all season, hitting the court daily, perfecting my technique, taking care of my body, hitting the gym almost every day. To sum it up, I just dedicate myself toward the craft, and that’s the best preparation for the game.

3. Pressure to Perform

Tose Zafirov

Q: No matter how professionally prepared you are in terms of nutrition and exercise, there is yet another essential factor in the mix. How do you deal with the pressure of having to perform in front of a crowd?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: I like pressure. I think that if you want anything good to happen in your life, you need to have pressure, just like diamonds, which are a chunk of coal that is made good under pressure. Nothing good ever happened sitting on the beach drinking coffee. When you advance, there is always going to be some kind of pressure. You just need to embrace it and play along.

4. How Do You Stay Motivated?

Tose Zafirov

Q: Now, we both know that each sport comes with ups and downs. So, how do you stay motivated after losing a game? Furthermore, how do you channel your frustration when the referee’s decision doesn’t go your way?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: I just practice a lot. Of course, I’m not perfect, and sometimes my mind is not prepared, or I get angry. However, I always try to shut down my emotions during the games. No matter what happened, I just continue and stick to the game plan and the things I know. Sticking to what I practiced during the training is how I try to be calm and relaxed during all kinds of situations.

5. How to Become A Winner?

Tose Zafirov

Q: What does it take to become a winner? Is it easy for you to reach any goal that you’ve put your mind on to, and how do you motivate yourself to do so? Do you have an idol?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: I just have an enormous passion for the game, and even if I lose or win tomorrow, I’m back on the court the next day trying to improve myself. Even when I lose, I look at it as a lesson. I don’t have a problem with the critics or not playing perfectly because sometimes it happens. So, just keep going and give your best day after day!

6. The Most Memorable Moments

Tose Zafirov

Q: What was the most important game you played in your career, and why? What moment this season were you most proud of yourself? Also, how does it feel to be FIBA 3×3 world’s no.1 player?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: I don’t look in the past or in the future too much, so when you ask me what is the most important game in my career, I will always say the next one. The reason for this is because I want to live in the moment and embrace what’s in front of me.

7. The Excitement of 3×3 Basketball

Tose Zafirov

Q: What is the most exciting part of basketball or playing 3×3? Can you tell us a bit more about the camp 3×3? What is the difference between an academy and a camp?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: The main difference between basketball and 3×3 players is the mental attitude. Even though it’s the same sport, it’s a totally different discipline. To better explain the difference between the two, I always mention Usain bolt, who is one of the best runners in the world. He can probably do a long jump too, but he doesn’t want to since it’s a totally different technique and practice. When it comes to the difference between an academy and a camp, an academy is supposed to be a more comprehensive way of learning. An academy should take care of your mind and body and educate you in a proper way. However, people use the term “academy” just because it sounds good. When I organize something, I organize camps or training camps, which last 3 or 4 days. In those camps, we gather, practice together, and share our experiences and knowledge.

8. What Has Basketball Taught You?

Tose Zafirov

Q: What has basketball taught you that carries over into the other areas of your life? How do you feel about making your whole country proud?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: Basketball Is my life. A lot of values that I learn in the game I implement in my everyday life. Representing my country is one of the best things that has ever happened to me, and it’s a major honor to have this moment in my professional carrier.

9. The Future Of 3×3 Basketball

Tose Zafirov

Q: Do you think that 3×3 has the potential to be a top sport in the world? Where do you see 3×3 basketball in Serbia within the next ten years?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: My personal opinion is that 3×3 basketball is never going to be bigger than 5×5 basketball. The reason for this is because 5×5 basketball is more complex, and it’s harder to play with a smaller hole. 3×3 will always be a secondary sport to 5×5 basketball, and that’s my personal opinion, but we will see.

10. What Is Your Message to The World?

Tose Zafirov

Q: Finally, what tips would you give to someone just starting in basketball? Also, what is your message to the world?

Dušan Domović Bulut

A: Just do it for the love of the game. There are always going to be ups and downs, and there are always going to be problems, not just in sports but in everyday life. But, if you have passion for things that you do, everything will fall into place, and it is going to be much easier for you.
